Legends event to offer free admission on Monday

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Tournament officials on Tuesday announced that the 2010 Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, to be held April 19-25 at the Westin Savannah Harbor Golf Resort & Spa, will open its gates to the public on Monday of tournament week.

"We wanted to do something special for our community as a way of saying thank you for the tremendous support over the past seven years," said Executive Director Joe Rotellini. "Through the help of Liberty Mutual and our other corporate partners, we are pleased to offer area residents this chance to come out and enjoy Monday's events on us."

The complimentary Monday admission will allow spectators the opportunity to watch some of the game's greatest legends reunite in the first round of the special two-day team event, the Demaret Division competition for players age 70 or older. Teams that have committed at this early date include 2009 division champions and fellow World Golf Hall of Fame members Bob Charles and Gary Player; Billy Casper, a three-time major champion with 51 PGA TOUR titles, and partner, Fred Hawkins, a member of the 1957 Ryder Cup team with one title; Gene Littler, a 29-time winner including the 1961 U.S. Open, and partner Don January, a 10-time winner on TOUR including the 1967 PGA Championship; Lee Trevino, a 29-time winner on both the PGA TOUR and Champions Tour with a combined 10 major titles, and partner Mike Hill, a three-time winner on TOUR; Dow Finsterwald, a 12-time winner on TOUR including the 1958 PGA Championship, and partner Bob Goalby, winner of the 1968 Masters and a total of 11 PGA TOUR victories.

"It's a great way to kick off the week and provides fans with a unique opportunity to watch some of the most decorated players from past generations compete," said Rotellini.

Following the Demaret Division first round on Monday morning, fans are encouraged to stay for the Legends Cup Pro-Am which will feature a to-be-announced line-up of 10 players.

The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf's unique format features a total of three team competitions during the week, starting with the Demaret Division on Monday and Tuesday followed by the Raphael Division, a 36-hole, two-man better-ball competition for ages 50+, on Friday and Saturday (unofficial money). Official competition begins with the first round of the Legends Division on Friday, April 23, a 54-hole official team event. Bernhard Langer and Tom Lehman are the defending champions.

The Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf is part of the Champions Tour's "The Road to the Charles Schwab Cup," a season-long points race that kicks off in Hawaii with 26 official events and culminates in San Francisco's Harding Park on November 1-7, with $2.1 million in payouts awarded to the season's top five leading performers.
